GOOD HEALTH, EXERCISE, AND SENIORS

Hi Folks,

This isn’t the first time I have blogged about this, so I guess this is what our young folks would call “a nag”. OK, so be it. But this is one nag you should listen to and heed!

Did you know that inactivity contributes to an estimated 250,000 deaths each year in the United States? This, in spite of our being reminded constantly on TV,  in newspapers, and magazines of how vitally important exercise is. . . Especially for seniors!!!!

Over one half of all Americans fail to meet current standards for exercise as recommended by the CDC, the US Surgeon General, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American College of Preventative Medicine. And I’ll bet this percentage is even higher for seniors. And these experts are talking about only 3o minutes of moderate exercise five days a week.

KEEPING YOUR MIND STRONG

KEEPING YOUR MIND STRONG AS YOU AGE

Of all the subjects I have talked about in this blog, the two most read are 11 Ways to Live to 100 and “Use It or Lose it – Keeping Your Brain Strong”. So it would seem that most of us would like to live long lives if we can keep our minds healthy. That makes sense.

Today, I’m sharing an article written by Jeffrey Robertson (read about Mr. Robertson at the end of his article) that talks about calisthenics for the mind with some suggested activities. This is good information. Read and apply.

GET OUT THERE,

EXERCISE FOR SENIORS – oh yes you do need it. :-)

Good Morning,

In a few minutes I am going to have to get off my duff and go exercise.

I hate exercise! I always have and probably always will. However, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning I get out and go down to my church gym and exercise with friends. I am not very knowledgeable about exercise but I know it’s good for me and a very important part of my life.

The National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health report “For the most part, when older people lose their ability to do things on their own, it doesn’t happen just because they have aged. More likely, it is because they have become inactive. Older inactive adults lose ground in four areas that are important for staying healthy and independent: endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility.”

COMPUTERS ARE GOOD FOR YOUR MIND

Hi Folks,

I love computers and I love the internet. I spend hours each day on my computer, I can’t imagine life without one.

I use my computer to keep a journal, our family budget, write letters, and to create booklets, manuals, and handouts. I use it to keep up on the local and world news, maintain this blog (and some other little enterprises), email family and friends, and do research. I even use it to reserve DVDs from the library. I am a member of several forums and membership groups and I have a fantastic collection of ebooks. I could go on and on. icon smile COMPUTERS ARE GOOD FOR YOUR MIND

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not a geek. Far from it. I struggle with my computer and everything connected with it and to it every day, but that doesn’t keep me from using and enjoying it.

THIS JUST IN – PRUNES PREVENT WRINKLES)

Hi,

I was reading this week’s USA Weekend in The Greenville News and came across Jean Carper’s column, Eat Smart (which is always interesting) saying Prunes may build stronger bones. What caught my attention though, was the last paragraph in the column, Preventing Wrinkles. In a large study, elderly people who ate the most prunes, apples, vegetables, olive oil, fish and legumes had fewer wrinkles and less sun-damaged skin than those who ate lots of meat, butter and milk products.

Thanks for the information Jean but this brings up an intersting question. At what age does elderly start? I’m 72 and don’t particularly want to be wrinkled but I am sure not elderly. I would like to get the opinions of my blog readers on this. (The elderly and the not elderly icon smile THIS JUST IN PRUNES PREVENT WRINKLES) )

USE IT OR LOSE IT – KEEPING YOUR BRAIN STRONG

Hi there,

I just read a really great little article about preventing mental decline as we age. I wish I could print it here but the article, which appears in the fall issue of “Good Times”, a Coventry Health Care Magazine, is copyrighted so I’ll just summerize what the article says.

The article didn’t offer any breakthrough discoveries only encouragement and reinforcement of what we already know is the sure way to stay healthy as we age.
