Hi Folks,
Sorry I have been absent from these pages for a few days. Fall is here in upstate South Carolina which, for me, equates to getting the lawn ready for winter. Yea gads, what a job! De-thatch, aerate, fertilize, over-seed. Frankly, when I came in from working outside, I was too tired to work on this blog.
I keep telling Janie that I’m getting too old for all this work but she just grins, she knows me better.
Have a great autumn,
Woody
Saving Energy with Proper House Insulation
Almost half of your electric bill goes to regulating the temperature of your home. Thus if you want to save on your electric bills, the best place to start is your home’s insulation.
Good insulation helps keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer thus a well-insulated house allows your heating and cooling systems to work most efficiently. Proper insulation can save as much as 10% of your monthly electric bill. However, if your house has insufficient weather stripping and insulation, your furnace and air conditioner will have to run more, resulting in a higher utility bills.
Where to insulate
- Around light switches and power outlets
- Around plumbing fixtures that are fastened to outside walls
- Around pipes and wiring coming into the house
- Around windows and doors
- In your attic, basement, and crawl space
Insulation Tips
When adding insulation to your attic, crawl space, and basement check with your building supply dealer for the best type of insulation for the application and the proper R-value.
Recessed lights can be a source of heat loss but you need to be careful on how close you place the insulation next to these fixtures. Again, check with your building supply dealer for the local building code.
Follow the product instructions when installing insulation. The manufacturers instructions are the best source of information on how to maximize the use the products.
In Conclusion
A well-insulated house is like a well-sealed refrigerator. The better your refrigerator is sealed the less often the compressor has to run to keep it at the required temperature. The better your home is insulated, the longer it will stay at your required comfort level before the furnace or air conditioner has to run thus saving energy.
Saving energy means saving money.
One last item, Check your weather stripping and insulation twice a year, spring and fall are the best times. Then fix or replace the areas needing attention as soon as you discover them.
