Budget Travel

Hi Folks,

Have you taken your first trip for 2010? Spring is in the air and it just sorta’ calls many of us seniors to the open road.

Janie and I took our first trip last month. Up into the Smokies. It was a short trip, only four days, but short trips generally don’t cost as much as longer ones, leaving money for another get-a-way soon.

We’re big fans of VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owners). I’ll tell you a little about VRBO in the coming days.

Popular Vacations for Active Seniors

Hi Folks,

I’m just back from exercise with my group. We have the best time.  I never thought I would enjoy exercise!

This morning one of my friends in the group was telling us about his upcoming vacation to Denver. He has a very busy 10 days planned, including four games watching his beloved Cubs.

Most of my retired friends are very active, always off and doing something; traveling, helping others, repairing storm damaged houses, heading up food drives, blood drives, children camps, and on and on.

Five Kid Friendly US Vacation Destinations

Hi Folks,

I read somewhere that planning a family vacation is like planning a family. . .  Start nine months in advance.

There no such thing as the best vacations spots for families because all families are different. So decide what is best for your family -their ages, their likes and dislikes, what each enjoy doing, their interests, and temperment. And if you are a grandparent there will probably be other factors to consider. But if you spend plenty of time researching and planning you will undoubtly design a vacation that will be remembered for a lifetime for all the right reasons.

For starters here are five kid friendly family vacation destinations to consider.

Affordable Family Vacations

Hi Folks,

In June I posted two articles about low cost family fun trips:  http://www.retirement-on-a-budget.com/active-seniors-low-cost-family-fun-day-trips.htm and http://www.retirement-on-a-budget.com/active-seniors-low-cost-family-fun-trips-part-two.htm.  I have had a lot of visitors to these two posts so I thought I should follow up with some more low cost family friendly vacation suggestions.

The following article about family road trips (read kids and grand kids) should really get your creative juices flowing. I still have wonderful memories of all the road trips I went on with my dad and mom back in the 40s and 50s. Some were long rides and some were two or more days long but all were lots of fun. . . .  Thanks for the memories dad and mom.

Low Cost Family Fun Trips – Part Two

Hi Folks,

Here is part two of Low Cost Family Fun Trips, by Febe Van Zanten. These articles are written for families with children but they are just as enjoyable for adults without children.

As I mentioned yesterday Janie and I love to travel but those wonderful times on the road have been curtailed drastically this year due to the bad economy. icon sad Low Cost Family Fun Trips Part Two  But I have at least a dozen day trips planned for this summer and fall (we have already taken a couple) plus a couple overnighters.  These should satisfy our wondering spirit.

Low Cost Family Fun Day Trips

Hi Folks,

If you are like my wife and I, spring, summer and fall means V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N-S. We love to go and see, explore and discover. But with the economy in the pits, vacation time has pretty much came to a halt for us. So I have started searching out ideas for alternate vacations (read cheap). And I have found a lot of great ideas. Over the next weeks I will post some of the good ideas  I come up with.

I notice that a lot of the suggestions for inexpensive vacations are slanted toward families with children. But that doesn’t mean they don’t apply to us seniors. In fact there may be some terriffic ideas here for including you kids and grand kids.

SAVING MONEY ON TRAVEL

My wife and I love to travel. So far this year we have been to Orlando, FL, Myrtle Beach, SC, and Branson, MO.

Travel and “get-aways” are a real luxury when you’re living on a tight budget so to be able to take nice trips, ”Travel Expenses” is an important catagory in our annual budget (yup, we budget for everything).

We will have lots of future posts on traveling for less so I would like to request your input on your travel experiences. Please share with the readers of this blog ways that you save on travel and get-aways. We will never publish your email address.   Read more…
