Rate of Macular Degeneration Decreasing

Hi Folks,

Good news! The rate of macular degeneration has decreased by more than 30% since 1994 according to a study conducted by Ronald Klein, MD, MPH, professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Wisconsin, Madison.

It was predicted that the number of cases of macular degeneration would increase as the population aged but improvement in diet, exercise and control of high blood pressure have reversed the predictions.

Seniors Exercise-Aging Gracefully

Hi Folks,

I’ll not be exercising with my seniors exercise group this morning. I have entirely too much to do. But even though I’ll get plenty of exercise doing my yard work I’ll miss getting with my group.

I’ve written before about my exercise group, (http://www.retirement-on-a-budget.com/senior-fitness/.htm, and how important it is to my wife and I.

Senior Fitness

Hi Folks,

Well, we just got back from exercising with our senior exercise group. What a great bunch! Our youngest member is 62, the oldest is 91.

We meet for an hour three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), exercise for half an hour, take a 10-15 minute water/fellowship break then get back to it for another 15 – 20 minutes. We always have a good workout and have a wonderful time while keeping fit.

Exercise, a Natural Sleep Aid for Seniors

Hi Folks,

There are a number of reasons why exercise, particularly if performed at the right time of day, is considered the most positive sleep aid for seniors. None, however, are more significant than the fact that exercise is a completely natural form of aid. But before discussing why exercise is such a great sleep aid, it is important to examine both the definition of insomnia and the reasons that people suffer from this affliction.

At its basic level, insomnia is defined as a difficulty to either fall or stay asleep, or to experience sleep that seems inadequate or fails to produce the refreshing feeling that sleep normally provides, despite the length of time spent sleeping. Insomnia is not considered a disease, rather it is a symptom that is thought to have numerous, quite different causes. Of the types of things that can lead to patterns of insomnia, physicians note that physical disorders, drinking large amounts of alcohol in the evening, emotional problems, and stress are at the forefront. Research has also shown that sometimes the failure to sleep soundly is simply due to a lack of fatigue.

Fewer Physicians for Seniors

Hi Folks,

I am hearing a lot of grumbling and seeing a lot of head shaking in the medical/pharmaceutical community about health care reform as it applies to seniors.

Over the coming days as I publish several articles about Medicare and proposed health care changes for seniors I will  try to refrain from offering my opinions on health care for seniors. I will let you form your own opinions from the articles I publish.

Summer, a Dangerous Time For Senior Citizens

Hi Folks,

Boy is it hot here! mid to upper 90′s with heat indexes over 100 for the past week and this week isn’t looking much better!

At exercise this morning one of our guys got a little overheated and “blacked out” for a second and fell. He wasn’t hurt and is back to his old self but it served as a warning – us seniors have to go a little slower and watch ourselves a little closer.

Most of my senior friends are in great shape but they realize they are not as young as they used to be, so they go about their lives at a little different pace. . .  Smart!
