Key Vitamins for Seniors
Hi Folks,
I really, really get tired of self proclaimed experts and their conflicting advice on what to do to stay healthy. A few weeks ago I read a short article that proclaimed that taking vitamin and mineral supplements was not necessary – a waste of time and money. It stated that most of us get all the nutrients we need from our diet. That’s strange because the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) took that position some twenty years ago and has since reversed that position. I understand that now JAMA is advising all adults to take at least one multivitamin pill each day.
I read that almost 80 percent of Americans do not eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, the recommended minimum amount believed to provide sufficient essential nutrients. It would seem then that vitamin deficiency is a risk factor in the general population and especially the elderly.

Hey Senior, Your Walking Speed Could Predict How Long You Will Live
Hi Folks,
Well, this is interesting.
You have probably read of the new study out which concludes that how fast seniors walk could predict how long they will live. Fascinating stuff.
The two articles I read were both short, “news-in-brief” type articles that didn’t give a whole lot of details so I decided to see what I could learn about the study.
Here are some important highlights I learned from my investigation and links to a couple articles about the study if you would like to delve into it further. Read more…

Rate of Macular Degeneration Decreasing
Hi Folks,
Good news! The rate of macular degeneration has decreased by more than 30% since 1994 according to a study conducted by Ronald Klein, MD, MPH, professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Wisconsin, Madison.
It was predicted that the number of cases of macular degeneration would increase as the population aged but improvement in diet, exercise and control of high blood pressure have reversed the predictions.

Seniors Exercise-Aging Gracefully

I’ve written before about my exercise group, (http://www.retirement-on-a-budget.com/senior-fitness/.htm, and how important it is to my wife and I.

Senior Fitness
Hi Folks,
Well, we just got back from exercising with our senior exercise group. What a great bunch! Our youngest member is 62, the oldest is 91.
We meet for an hour three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), exercise for half an hour, take a 10-15 minute water/fellowship break then get back to it for another 15 – 20 minutes. We always have a good workout and have a wonderful time while keeping fit.
