Guilt Free Leisure Time – The Key to Happy Retirement

Hi Folks,

Burton Widener, todays writer, addresses an important subject with retired folks. What do we do with our extra time.

I’m afraid that a lot of us old work horses are ashamed to admit that we no longer have a paying job so we tell people who ask (and sometimes people that don’t ask) just how busy we are. Admittedly, many of us are more busy now than when we were employed but that is the way we want it. But for many, retirement is to enjoy life, so enjoy it and tell others.

A Last Will & Testament But No Plan For Living

Hello Neighbor,

I have got to get outside and weed my flower beds, but first I have a thought I want to share with you.

Yesterday I posted an article about how everyone should have a Durable Power of Attorney and that maybe a Durable Power of Attorney is more important than a Will. Of course almost everyone our age has a Last Will And Testament. But then later in the day I was reading a book that took all of that one step farther. The writer pointed out that most of us write a Will telling folks what we want to happen after we die but few of us write a plan for what we want to happen while we are still alive.

Now isn’t that a kick in the head . . . And a bit sad!  This writer and most people reading this blog are 55 years old or older and most of us don’t have a plan for how we want to live the rest of our lives. Worse yet, we didn’t have a plan for getting where we are now! We just sort of left everything to chance.

Enjoy Retirement by Recreating a New Mental Outlook

Hi Folks,

I hope you are having a fine day and, if you are retired, a really great day.

It seems that, for whatever reason, many retirees have trouble transitioning into retirement. And, for those who do have a bit of trouble coping with their “third age”, take heart, there is an answer. It may take some time and a lot of self searching. But it is all worth it. For many people retirement is the best time of their lives.

Today’s author, Shane Flait, has some good advice about where to start redefining your retirement life.

Staying Happy and Healthy – How to Maintain a Sense of Purpose in Retirement

Hi Folks,

I just got back from a safety meeting for Group Leaders of our local Adopt-A-Highway liter pickup program. It was interesting learning about the new safety rules and fun hearing the group leaders share some of their experiences. Some of the members of my pickup crew have been with our group since it begun 20 years ago and that’s a lot of trash. icon smile Staying Happy and Healthy How to Maintain a Sense of Purpose in Retirement

We’re proud of the good job we do keeping our two mile stretch of highway clean. We sure don’t do it for recognition as very few people know we make these pick ups. It’s just our way of contributing to our community.

Send a Message of Cheer and Hope

Hi Folks,

Each time I receive a note, letter, or card from Rick, my financial adviser, it always includes a smiley face beside his signature. This is his way of adding a bit of cheer to our day. And it works. A smiley face can make your day.

Cheer, hope, a ray of sunshine . . . this is something that almost every senior can give -  in person, through the mail and through all the other means of communicating. We can all do our part to brighten our country a bit.

Kid Friendly Family Vacations

Hi Folks,

Some of the best times I have had were when I took my daughter and later my granddaughter on vacations and outings. Some were pretty elaborate – Disney World, some not so elaborate - Ringling Brothers Circus and some were downright simple – cookouts in the backyard. But all remain wonderful memories.

Today I use ever chance I get to advise young couples to be building memories with their children while they are still young. And I encourage my older friends to plan trips and outings with their grandchildren.

HEALTHY SENIORS – Why Laughter Is Good For You

Hi Folks,

Yesterday I read in WalkTheTalk,  www.walkthetalk.com , that studies show we need 12 laughs a day to stay healthy! So, I did a little research and sure enough there is a ton of proof that laughter can keep you healthy and heal your illnesses. Later this week I want to publish an article (maybe two) on the healthy benefits of laughter but for now I think this article by Glenn Plaskin is just what the doctor ordered. It’s a little longer than most articles I publish but you don’t want to miss a word of it.

Have a laugh filled day,

ARE YOU A BAD NEWS JUNKIE?

Hi Folks,

The December 27, 2008 issue of the National Post published a very interesting article entitled Bad News Junkies, http://www.nationalpost.com/related/links/story.html?id=1118050. Reporter Allison Hanes introduced her readers to Hymie Anisman, a neuroscientist at Carleton University in Ottawa, who has diagnosed a new, highly contagious ailment for this recession era: Economic Masochism.

Dr. Anisman, who studies the effects of stress, said in a recent interview “I have a friend who sits all day going through various journals online and various blogs as if he wants to find bad news. He’s read it all 20 times, he knows what’s there. It’s almost like he’s addicted by it. But every once in a while he’ll get some little glimmer that will reinforce some little glimmer of hope.”
