The Critical Importance of Recreation For Senior Citizens

Hi Folks,

What are you up to today? Lunch with friends, catching a matinée, taking a nice walk, working in your garden, planning your next trip, dropping by a park to watch the kids play or maybe making a visit to the mall?

Sure are lots of things to do, aren’t there? Oh, being a senior is a such great time, especially if you are retired. Time to have more fun, be a kid again, get involved in some great causes, encourage others and on and on and on.

SENIOR: SHOPPING IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

Hi Folks,

I read in the September 18, 2011 issue of Bottom Line Secrets (http://www.bottomlinesecrets.com/el/bls_signup.html) that shopping is good for your health. As I am one of those folks not particularly fond of shopping I read the short little article with some skepticism.

It seems that researcher, Yu-Hung Chang, PhD of the Institute of Population Health Sciences in Taiwan did a study of 1800 adults 65 years old and older about their shopping habits. He found that those who shopped every day had a 27% lower risk of death than those who shopped less often. And (you’re not going to believe this) men benefited from daily shopping more than women, 28% compared with women 23%.

SENIORS, SOCIALIZING IS IMPORTANT!

Age Is No Excuse Not To Be Sociable!

Hi Folks,

Please let me say that again, age is no excuse not to be sociable! Many people in their sixties and above often use their age as an excuse not to socialize, citing that various activities should be left up to younger generations. This is definitely not the case. You are never too old to get out and about and socialize and there are thousands of great groups out there to get you involved in various activities and outings. In fact, when you pass a certain age and no longer work, socializing is often the only chance you get to see existing friends and make new ones. These friends should not be overlooked because they form as tight a support network as any other age group, often more so in fact! Don’t forget that you can never have too many friends.

Socializing should be an essential part of your post-retirement routine. Many seniors tend to keep to themselves after retirement, but they are the ones who are missing out as life passes them by. Contrary to popular belief, socializing does not have to be a daily activity. You can get out as little or as often as you like, depending obviously on what suits you. For a lack of a better way of putting it, the senior scene is much the same as that of the younger generation – you have your regulars and those that stay on the periphery of any group. You can choose to be either.

Volunteering and Retirement

Hi Folks,

Practically all of my retired friends are involved in volunteer activities. They volunteer at a pregnancy crisis center, work at a free medical center, deliver meals on wheels, visit nursing homes, work with senior fitness programs - the list goes on and on.

This is their way of giving back.

Senior Citizen, Do You Have a Purpose in Life?

Hi Folks,

I sincerely believe that everyone was made for a purpose and to have a purpose!

Want proof? Look around you. Talk to lots of people. Listen to people when they tell you about themselves. It won’t take long for you to see that the happiest, most fulfilled people are the ones who have a purpose in life  - and the unhappiest people you will meet are the ones who have no purpose.

Having a purpose add meaning to life.

Exercise, a Natural Sleep Aid for Seniors

Hi Folks,

There are a number of reasons why exercise, particularly if performed at the right time of day, is considered the most positive sleep aid for seniors. None, however, are more significant than the fact that exercise is a completely natural form of aid. But before discussing why exercise is such a great sleep aid, it is important to examine both the definition of insomnia and the reasons that people suffer from this affliction.

At its basic level, insomnia is defined as a difficulty to either fall or stay asleep, or to experience sleep that seems inadequate or fails to produce the refreshing feeling that sleep normally provides, despite the length of time spent sleeping. Insomnia is not considered a disease, rather it is a symptom that is thought to have numerous, quite different causes. Of the types of things that can lead to patterns of insomnia, physicians note that physical disorders, drinking large amounts of alcohol in the evening, emotional problems, and stress are at the forefront. Research has also shown that sometimes the failure to sleep soundly is simply due to a lack of fatigue.

Retirement Activities on a Budget

Hi Folks,

I have a great article for you today, “Retirement Activities on a Budget”. It’s “right up our alley” for this blog.

There are so many wonderful things to do that cost very little or nothing. Yet many times we get so caught up in thinking that we can’t do anything because we don’t have the money that we miss out on a really fulfilling life.  Don’t let that happen to you.

Happy retirement,
