15 Ways to Save On Heating And Cooling Costs

Hi Folks,

I have some great energy saving tips for you that I’ll post over the next few days. Put just a few of these to use and you’ll save a bundle on your electric bill each year.

Want to see how much you are saving? Make a list of your electric bills from over the past year (two years is better, if you still have the bills). List them down a sheet of paper: Month, killowatts used, dollar amount of the bill. Then each month post this same information from your new bill to your list opposite the same month from the previous year.  Now you can see the difference between last years usage and this.

I have a friend that changed out all of his incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFL). He is saving several dollars a month from implementing just this one energy saving step.

Jobs For Retirees

Hi Folks,

The face of retirement sure has changed over the past few year, hasn’t it?

For the most part we are a much healthier lot than our forefathers and we live a lot longer. We are a great deal more active than our parents, being involved in numerous worthy activities and, for various reasons, many of us continue working during our senior years.

And that’s what Rick Roberts, today’s guest author, is writing about, the options for work after retirement.

Retirement Gift Ideas

Hi Folks,

I have a terrible time coming up with gifts ideas. No matter what the occasion, when it comes time to buy a gift my mind goes blank and panic sets in.

I am of the opinion that all gift giving should be outlawed! But as there isn’t much of a chance that will happen I am always on the alert for good gift ideas.

Will My Social Security Check Be Enough?

Hi Folks,

As I have mentioned in previous posts, more people arrive at this website with the search term “living only on Social Security” than any other search term. People are looking for ways to live on their Social Security check.

If you are one of these folks I can tell you that, in my opinion, unless you make some drastic lifestyle changes, go back to work, find a part time job, or start your own business, you’re not going to be able to live on Social Security alone!

Hi Folks,

John Steely, today’s contributing author, doesn’t have a big surprise in store for many of us retirees but his article will confirm our suspicions that it doesn’t cost less to live in retirement.

Budget Travel Bargains

Hi Folks,

Well, all the young people will be headed back to school in a few days leaving more space on the highways for us older folks icon smile Budget Travel Bargains .  Yippee. I just love to travel after the kids have gone back to school. It’s still warm, the tourist places are still open, and it’s not crowded.

Which brings up a question -  have you saved enough money for a late summer trip?

Retirement Activities on a Budget

Hi Folks,

I have a great article for you today, “Retirement Activities on a Budget”. It’s “right up our alley” for this blog.

There are so many wonderful things to do that cost very little or nothing. Yet many times we get so caught up in thinking that we can’t do anything because we don’t have the money that we miss out on a really fulfilling life.  Don’t let that happen to you.

Happy retirement,

Smart household savings start in the laundry room

Hi Folks,

We just returned from a great trip to Boone, NC, with my senior’s group.

We toured Samaritans Purse, http://www.samaritanspurse.org/,  ate a very special meal at Dan’l Boone Inn,  http://www.danlbooneinn.com/, (a real feast served country style), and took in one of the country’s finest outdoor dramas, Horne In The West.  We also visited the original Mast General Store, http://www.mastgeneralstore.com/valle_crucis.cfm, (established in 1883) in Valle Crucis, NC.

For a wonderful and inexpensive vacation (especially if you travel with a group) I recommend Boone, NC and North Carolina’s High Country.
