HELP FOR RETIREES IN YOUR STATE

Do you ever have questions about services and help available for retirees in your state?  Would you like to know where to get started finding answers to your questions?  Well then, read on.

I have just spent a very enlightening hour or so surfing around the web, checking various states to see what sort of government agencies are available for retirees. Although I didn’t check all 50 states, each state that I did check seemed to have several agencies dedicated to providing services just for seniors.

“SPRINGING” DURABLE POWER of ATTORNEY

Today’s post isn’t about saving you money. It’s about making your life a little less stressful.

Many folks would like to have a Durable Power of Attorney so that in the event they become ill or incapacitated someone will be authorized to pay their bills, open their safety deposit box, etc. But giving someone the right to handle their affairs while they are capable of doing it themselves makes many people uncomfortable.

So enters the Springing Durable Power of Attorney.

GROCERY SHOPPING ON WEDNESDAY

Well, today is Wednesday and the newspapers are full of super market advertisements telling about their specials. So today is a good day to do your grocery shopping. Not only do the sales start today but many supermarkets also give an additional 5% discount to seniors on Wednesday. Not only do you catch the specials but you also save an additional .05 cents on every dollar you spend.

Janie and I like to spend time checking what we have in stock and then laying out our menu for the next week. Then we only have to buy those items that we need to complete our meals.

WATER HEATING

Well, I’m back, after a couple days of taking care of some of my other responsibilities (and some fun things to). Today let’s talk about heating water. Kinda’ boreing subject until you see how much you can save. Years ago I learned to stop leaks as soon as I found them. A drip can cost a lot of money, whether hot water or cold. Also we use low flow shower heads in our home. They are great and save a bundle.

SAVING MONEY ON DRYING CLOTHES

Well, after my last post on drying laundry on an outside clothes line my wife said I ought to include some money saving tips on drying clothes with a clothes dryer. I think that means she isn’t interested in the clothes line thing. She still remembers bringing in diapers frozen as stiff as a board. icon smile SAVING MONEY ON DRYING CLOTHES

So, here are some ways to save a bit when using your clothes dryer:

OLD FASHION CLOTHES DRYING

One of my neighbors is from Germany. A really nice lady with two fine sons (one is a doctor). Every since we have lived here (10+ years) I have noticed that on nice days she hangs her laundry to dry on a line in her back yard. It is one of those ”lines” that has four sides and is supported by a pole in the center. The line sets in a sunny spot close to her back porch.  I have always contributed her drying her laundry outside to her German heritage. Recently, however, I read an article written by a lady who has discovered the pleasure of drying her laundry on an outside line. That article put drying laundry outside in a whole new light for me. Not only does your laundry smell really nice after drying in the sun (no dryer sheet smell) but you save a bunch on your electricity bill.  I understand that it costs around 40 cents to dry a load of laundry (I’m going to do some research on this and report back to you). So if you hang out the equivalent of three dryer loads of laundry a week for 20 weeks a year, not only are you saving a minimum of $24.00, but you also get great smelling laundry, some fresh air and sunshine, and a chance to meet your neighbors icon smile OLD FASHION CLOTHES DRYING .

I hope you have a pleasant day,
Woody

WATCH YOUR PENNIES AND ….

Watch your pennies and your dollars will take care of themselves!I’ll bet you heard that “saying” a hundred  times when you were growing up. You don’t hear it much any more though - shoot, these days most folks won’t pick up a penny laying on the sidewalk. . . Maybe we should change the denomination to nickles or dimes, or even quarters. But, be it pennys or quarters, the statement is still as true today as it was 50 – 60 years ago. Watch how you spend your pennies and you’ll not have to worry so much about your dollars.

One of the ongoing topic in this blog will be “A penny saved”. When we hear of cool ways to save a few pennies on regular ongoing puchases, we’ll pass them along to you, our blog community.  So keep a pen and paper handy so that when you learn of a way to save a few pennies, write it down and share it with the rest of us. In the next few days I’ll tell you how to send your “comments” to me so we can share them with everyone else.
